In a final reading on Thursday, November 24, lawmakers unanimously adopted a bill outlawing all kinds of LGBTQ “propaganda,” and the Russian government is now prepared to outlaw any public discussion of gay relationships.

There is already a legislation in Russia that forbids “gay promotion” for both adults and adolescents, effectively outlawing any mention of gay relationships in public.

The new regulation, according to rights groups, tightens the noose around LGBTQ relationships in Russia, having an impact on everything from books and movies to social media posts and even drag acts.

However, before becoming a law, the legislation must receive support from Putin and the upper chamber.

There will be repercussions for any non-traditional sexual behaviour propagated, The State Duma, Russia’s lower chamber of parliament, is presided over by Vyacheslav Volodin.

The legislation, he said, ‘will protect our children and the future of the country from the darkness spread by the US and European states.’

‘We have our own traditions and values,’ he added.

The bill also prohibits the ‘propaganda of paedophilia and sex change.’

The legislation bans what authorities deem as LGBTQ ‘propaganda’ in advertisement, books, media and cinema.

Violators will face hefty fines of up to 10 million rubles (£135,000).
