Remi Tinubu shares harvest from Aso Villa garden, reignites debate over self-sufficiency remarks

Nigeria’s First Lady, Remi Tinubu, has shared an update from her backyard garden at the Aso Villa, showcasing a harvest of homegrown vegetables.

The harvest included spinach, water leaf, and fluted pumpkin (ugu). Sharing the update, the First Lady reiterated that home gardening is an affordable way for families to access fresh and nutritious food.

Tinubu launched the “EveryHomeAGarden” initiative two years ago to encourage households across the country to cultivate vegetables and other crops in their homes as a means of improving food security and healthy eating.

However, her latest post has reignited public debate over comments she made weeks earlier, when she advised Nigerians facing economic hardship to consider starting small-scale businesses such as selling roasted corn, kuli-kuli, or akara to supplement their income.

While some social media users praised her for leading by example through home gardening, others argued that the update revived discussions about whether such suggestions adequately address the country’s current economic challenges.
