Justice Zainab Bulkachuwa, the president of the Court of Appeal (PCA), is to hand over to the next most senior judge of the panel in the presidential election tribunal, Justice Monica Dongban-Menssem of the Enugu division.
This was made known by Justice Bulkachuwa who stepped down due to allegation from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) that her husband’s position is a senator-elect of the All Progressives Congress (APC). The next in line after Menssem is Justice Morenike Ogunwumiju of Benin division.
Newsmen reveal that the panel, made up of Justices Abdu Aboki, Peter Ige, Samuel Oseji and Joseph Ikyegh, may not be reshuffled, Daily Trust reports.
Earlier, Legit.ng reported that Atiku Abubakar of the PDP had reacted to the ruling by Justice Zainab Bulkachuwa recusing herself from the presidential Election tribunal on Wednesday, May 22.
Atiku in a statement sent to Legit.ng said Justice Bulkachuwa had shown courage in her ruling at the tribunal as no man can be a judge in his own case.
He said the call by his legal team for Justice Zainab Bulkachuwa to recuse herself from the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal was predicated on this principle, being that her husband, Alhaji Mohammed Bulkachuwa, is an APC senator-elect and the case she was expected to adjudicate upon had a bearing on that party.
