NUAHP begins indefinite strike at UCH over non-reinstatement of pharmaceutical services director

The Nigerian Union of Allied Health Professionals (NUAHP), University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, has commenced an indefinite strike over the non-reinstatement of the hospital’s Director of Pharmaceutical Services, Dr Adeyinka Ishola.

The industrial action began on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, with the union demanding the implementation of a recommendation by the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare that Ishola be reprimanded and reinstated.

Union demands implementation of ministry’s recommendation

According to NUAHP, an independent investigation conducted by the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare found Ishola not guilty of any fraudulent act in connection with the sale of a tricycle donated to the Pharmacy Department.

The union said the investigation only faulted Ishola for failing to properly carry the hospital management along before the sale.

Speaking at a briefing, NUAHP chairman, Comrade Oladayo Olabampe, said the strike followed several unsuccessful attempts to resolve the matter through dialogue.

He also alleged that the union’s representative, who served as an observer during the hospital’s initial investigation, reported concerns about the process.

According to Olabampe, the representative believed the panel appeared to have reached a conclusion regarding Ishola’s fate before giving him an opportunity to fully present his defence.

Ministry’s investigation reportedly reached different conclusion

Olabampe said the hospital’s investigative panel eventually recommended Ishola’s suspension in the interest of the public and forwarded the recommendation to the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare for ratification.

However, he said the ministry subsequently constituted an independent investigative team, which visited UCH to examine the matter.

According to the union chairman, the ministry’s team reached a different conclusion from the hospital’s panel and recommended that Ishola be reprimanded and reinstated.

NUAHP is therefore demanding that the ministry’s recommendation be implemented, maintaining that the failure to reinstate Ishola left the union with no option but to commence the indefinite industrial action.

The development is expected to affect healthcare services at UCH as the union presses its demands for the implementation of the ministry’s findings.
