On Friday, May 26, a passenger on an Asiana Airlines aeroplane opened a door amid a panicked moment. The jet later landed safely at a South Korean airport.

Officials from the airline and the government said that although some passengers attempted to prevent the door from being opened, it was ultimately partially opened, endangering the lives of the 194 passengers.

The aircraft was flying from South Korea’s southern island of Jeju to the southeasterly city of Daegu. It wasn’t immediately clear how long the door was open; the flight usually lasts around an hour.

Police detained the unidentified person who opened the door, the airline said. The motive wasn’t immediately known.

The passengers included teenage athletes who plan to attend track and field competitions in Ulsan, another southeastern city.

The incident terrified some passengers with some being rushed to hospital after suffering breathing difficulties, Asiana and Transport Ministry officials said.
