“I was erroneously arrested by EFCC” – Doyin Okupe says as he’s released

Doyin Okupe, the recently-retired director general of the Labour Party Presidential Campaign Council, claimed that the Department of State Service’s decision to rearrest him at the request of the Economic and Financial Crime Commission was “erroneous.”

This morning, January 12, Okupe was detained at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport.

After being freed, he revealed on Twitter that the Federal High Court in Abuja had long since confiscated his passport, even before it had found him guilty of breaking the Money Laundering Act’s provisions that carried a two-and-a-half-year prison sentence.

Senior EFCC officers in Lagos and Abuja have apologised for the blunder in his arrest, he continued.

He tweeted: “I was arrested and detained at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos this morning, January 12, on my way to the UK for medicals, years after my passport was withheld by the FHC, Abuja.

“I just left the EFCC office where the senior and younger officers in Lagos and Abuja apologised to me for the error.
