According to a report by The Vanguard on Monday, August 17, 2026, Nigerian football icon Austin “Jay-Jay” Okocha has opened up on the origin of the nickname that came to define his football career, tracing it back to his childhood days on the streets of his neighbourhood.
Speaking on the ObiOne podcast, the former Super Eagles captain explained that the nickname was born out of necessity rather than choice.
Growing up, he and several other boys in the area shared the same first name, Austin, which made it difficult for people to tell them apart, especially since Okocha and his brothers were all footballers playing on the same streets.
To solve the confusion, his friends started calling him “Austin Jay-Jay’s brother”, a tag that gradually got shortened until “Jay-Jay” was all that remained.
“It started in the neighbourhood where we grew up. All of us were footballers; we were just on the street playing, and my two brothers played as well. We had a few Austins then, so to identify which Austin was which, they started calling me Austin Jay-Jay’s brother. From there, Jay-Jay stuck,” he said.
He added that the name later proved useful beyond Nigeria, as people abroad found it easier to pronounce than his real name, Augustine.
That convenience led him to formally adopt “Jay-Jay” and have it included in his passport, though he joked that he still compensates his brother for the name.
Born Augustine Azuka Okocha, the former Paris Saint-Germain, Bolton Wanderers and Fenerbahçe star built a legacy defined by flair, dribbling brilliance and creativity, qualities that made “Jay-Jay” one of the most celebrated names in Nigerian football history, a status that endures well into his retirement.
