“I didn’t marry my ex-husband because of money. My father was very wealthy, I didn’t grow up poor” — Interior designer, Ehi Eghebor

Interior designer Ehi Eghebor has opened up about her failed marriage, explaining that she did not marry her former husband because of his wealth, as she had already grown up in a financially comfortable family.

Speaking about her experience, Ehi described her former marriage as feeling like a “luxury prison” despite living in a beautiful and comfortable home.

According to her, she met her ex-husband about a year before they got married, but they did not begin dating at the time because she was not yet of age. She said he repeatedly expressed his intention to marry her and get to know her better.

Ehi Says Money Was Not Her Motivation

Ehi explained that although her former husband was financially successful, his wealth was not what attracted her because she was already accustomed to a comfortable lifestyle.

She revealed that her father was a wealthy businessman in Benin who owned several filling stations and that she attended some of the best schools while growing up.

“I didn’t grow up poor. I mean, I didn’t even grow up average,” she said, emphasising that financial considerations were not the reason she chose to marry him.

However, Ehi said the marriage eventually became difficult to endure as she felt increasingly isolated and came to the realisation that her husband was unlikely to change.

Describing the home she lived in during the marriage, she said:

“It was like being in prison. Yeah. Maybe a luxury prison because the house was really nice.”

She acknowledged that she enjoyed the luxurious lifestyle but said it did not make up for the loneliness and feeling of being trapped.

What Made Her Leave the Marriage

According to Ehi, the turning point came when she realised that her husband was not changing and that she had already become isolated.

She said the realisation eventually gave her the strength and courage to leave the marriage and move forward with her life.
