A medical physicist and Imam in Ogun State, Farouk Alrem Al-Egbaawiy, has shared his views on polygyny, outlining what he described as some of the principles that should guide men who have multiple wives.
According to the cleric, polygyny can be one of the means of seeking nearness to Allah when it is practised with piety, responsibility and fairness.
Imam speaks on health considerations in polygynous marriages
Al-Egbaawiy also highlighted the importance of health precautions in polygynous marriages.
He explained that if one wife contracts an infection, medical professionals may recommend that the husband and his other wives also undergo treatment, depending on the nature of the infection and the doctor’s assessment.
His comments have sparked discussion about the responsibilities that come with polygyny, particularly issues surrounding fairness, health, mutual responsibility and the welfare of all members of a polygynous family.
The Imam’s remarks emphasise the need for men who practise polygyny to approach it with responsibility and consideration for the physical and emotional wellbeing of everyone involved.
