“How can I politely tell my mum…?” — Lady says as her mother asks an unexpected question

A Nigerian woman has ignited internet discussion after sharing a comical but familiar story about family pressure, marriage chatter, and an unexpected emotional ambush during wedding preparations.

In a post on X, then known as Twitter, the woman described how her mother’s visit to her home turned awkward while her brother’s wedding preparations were ongoing.

According to her, she was hosting her mother when her brother and his fiancée arrived to discuss wedding plans.

Everything appeared normal until the fiancée warmly addressed her brother as “oko mi,” a Yoruba phrase meaning “my husband.”

She claimed she simply smiled during the encounter, without blushing or reacting emotionally, but that simple smile proved to be a costly error.

The lady recounted that her gentle grin triggered her mother, who turned to her and inquired in Yoruba, “Eyin nko?” “Kò tíì sí Bọ́dà nà?” means “What about you?”

“Is there no man yet?” She described the experience as extremely overwhelming, noting that her smile faded instantaneously and she felt deeply ashamed.

The problem was exacerbated by her mother’s past advice to take her time with relationships, making the unexpected query seem perplexing and unjust.

As if the mother’s comment wasn’t enough, the lady went on to say that her brother, now officially the “oko iyawo,” had joined in by assuring her that her own relationship was “around the corner.”

She humorously questioned his position in the prophecy, wondering if he was the one responsible for finding her a mate.

Frustrated but clearly amused, she asked other social media users how to politely request that her mother and the lovebirds return to their respective homes, as the continuous reminders were becoming too much to stomach.
