GUNMEN INVADED NASARAWA COMMISSIONER’S RESIDENCE, KILLING INNOCENT UNDERGRADUATE

Gunmen suspected to be armed robbers in the early hours of Sunday invaded the residence of the Nasarawa State Commissioner for Higher Education, Chief Clement Uhembe, and killed a 400-level student of the Federal University, Lafia identified as Terlumum Hemba.

It was gathered that the incident occurred around 1 am in the Kaduna Koro area of Lafia, the Nasarawa State capital, along the Lafia-Makurdi highway. The gunmen were alleged to be cultists.
 

 
Narrating the incident to Northern City News in Lafia, an eyewitness, who identified himself only as Daddy, informed the correspondent that the gunmen terrorized the occupants of the building and shot the microbiology student dead.
 

 
Daddy, who stated that he was hiding in a vehicle parked on the premises, narrated that the gunmen shot Hemba at close range as he attempted to escape, adding that his assailants also beat him with sticks till he died.
 

 
He said, “The gunmen beat some of the occupants of the house. They demanded to see the commissioner who had traveled with some members of his family to Port Harcourt for his son’s wedding.”
 

 
He further explained that the other victims escaped into a nearby bush, while the gunmen had a field day searching the commissioner’s living room.
 

 
Speaking on the incident, Uhembe stated that he suspected the involvement of his political adversaries in the attack.
 

 
He said, “The issue arose from the victory of the All Progressives Congress governorship candidate in Ihuman ward during the last elections, which the party had never won since its existence, and it angered a lot of people. After the APC won, my life came under threat from some individuals.”
 

 
The Divisional Police Officer in charge of Agyaragu division, Mr Biam, who confirmed the attack to the correspondent, stated that Hemba’s remains had been deposited in the Dalhatu Araf Specialist Hospital morgue, adding that investigations into the incident had commenced.
