“Give birth to children you can train” – Nigerian woman raises concern over girl carrying heavy water gallons upstairs

A Nigerian woman, Ugwuagbo Nkemdilim, has raised concerns after allegedly witnessing a young girl repeatedly carry heavy gallons of water up to the third floor of a building more than 15 times daily.

Nkemdilim disclosed that the task had been part of the child’s daily routine since she moved into the area about two months ago.

According to her, she was particularly disturbed by the size of the water container, which she said appeared too large for the young girl to carry comfortably. She also questioned why the child was undertaking such strenuous work despite the presence of older people in the household.

In a Facebook post on Friday, October 16, 2026, Nkemdilim urged parents to have only the number of children they could adequately provide for and care for.

She also advised parents who send their children to live with relatives or other guardians to ensure that the children are treated properly and are not subjected to excessive work or exploitation.

Recounting what she had observed, she wrote:

“I watched this girl carry this gallons of water more than 15 times to the 3rd floor of that upstairs and this is her daily routine since almost 2 months am here. My main concern is that the gallon is way bigger than her and the people she is staying with have older people in the house.”

She continued:

“Dear parents please give birth to children you can train and while at that please even if you will allow your children to stay with anybody make sure who the person is. I don’t know why some married people are this wicked shall.”

Nkemdilim’s account has drawn attention to concerns about children’s welfare, particularly those living away from their biological parents under the care of relatives or other guardians.

Her remarks also highlight the importance of ensuring that children are given age-appropriate responsibilities and protected from potentially harmful or excessive physical labour.

However, further details about the girl’s age, the size of the water container and the circumstances surrounding her living arrangement were not provided in the account.
