The World Cup of 2022 attracted attention for both its outstanding on-field performances and for the host country, Qatar, whose treatment of migrant workers and stance on homosexuality sparked controversy and detracted from the tournament.
Gianni Infantino, the president of FIFA, was caught up in the controversy after he was charged with accepting money from the Qatari government to allow them to host the tournament. More recently, the criticism reached a new high when a contentious statue of Infantino was unveiled in Frankfurt, Germany.
Gianni Infantino has previously defended Qatar for the manner in which it held the World Cup and criticized the western nations for being hypocritical in accusing the nation of violating human rights when they themselves have been doing so for centuries.
