A woman’s account of how her mother-in-law intervened in her marriage just two weeks after her wedding and advised her against taking on unequal domestic obligations has generated a lot of discussion online.
The anecdote, which has gone viral on social media, illustrates how young couples’ discussions about gender norms, marriage obligations, and domestic duties are changing.
The woman claims that her mother-in-law, who was unable to attend the wedding because of travel concerns, paid her a visit soon after.
Her spouse allegedly asked her about laundry in a way that was seen as dismissive, which marked a turning point in their increasingly friendly relationship.
“We were inside her room when my husband came in asking about his clothes. I went to look for them, but when I returned, she asked why I allow him talk to me like that. She said, ‘You’re doing his laundry and he still can’t look for his clothes himself? What are you, a maid?’” the woman recounted.
She added, “She pulled me close and said, ‘Don’t let him turn you into his house girl. Since I got married, I’ve never done your father-in-law’s laundry; instead, he does mine. If he can’t appreciate your effort, let him wash and fold himself.’ That was the last time I did his laundry, and now he even does mine.”
The mother-in-law has received appreciation for the account, with many characterising her position as progressive and in favour of marital justice.
