Nigeria’s Federal Government has designated Friday, June 12, as a public holiday to commemorate this year’s Democracy Day, reiterating its commitment to democratic administration and national unity.
The announcement was made on Thursday by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, via a statement issued by Magdalene Ajani, the ministry’s permanent secretary.
According to the statement, June 12 holds a special position in Nigerian history because it commemorates the fortitude, tenacity, and sacrifices of Nigerians who battled for the country’s democratic transition.
The minister said that pro-democracy campaigners’ efforts continue to shape Nigeria’s governance principles today, including as accountability, transparency, the rule of law, and inclusive leadership.
Tunji-Ojo also reassured Nigerians that the government is still committed to protecting lives and property throughout the country.
He stated that the Ministry of Interior, in collaboration with security agencies, will continue to improve internal security measures to promote national stability and growth.
He stressed the importance of a secure environment for the advancement of democracy and the attainment of broader national development objectives.
As Nigerians observe Democracy Day, the minister asked them to embrace the time to reflect and renew their devotion to national values.
He encouraged Nigerians to obey the law, participate properly in civic affairs, and support institutions that defend democratic governance.
Democracy Day is marked on June 12 each year to commemorate the 1993 presidential election, which was widely regarded as Nigeria’s most free and fair.
Moshood Abiola was thought to have won the election until it was nullified by Ibrahim Babangida’s military regime.
Former President Muhammadu Buhari shifted Nigeria’s Democracy Day commemoration from May 29 to June 12 in 2018 to commemorate the momentous election and battle for democratic government.
