‘’Close shops, stay safe’’- NiDCOM appeals to Nigerians in South Africa as xenophobic attacks spread

The (NiDCOM) has advised Nigerians living in to temporarily shut down their businesses and avoid any confrontations amid rising xenophobic tensions.

The warning follows increasing anti-foreigner protests across parts of the country, where some groups have called for the expulsion of non-nationals and the closure of foreign-owned businesses.

According to NiDCOM, the advisory was issued after a circular from the Nigerian Consulate-General in Johannesburg. The commission noted that protests in cities such as East London, Cape Town, Durban, and areas within KwaZulu-Natal have turned vi0lent, with reports of looting, property destruction, and injuries.

The agency also revealed that intelligence from the consulate suggests more demonstrations are planned in Gauteng province between April 27 and 29, with protesters aiming to pressure authorities over the presence of foreign nationals.

Nigerians in the country have been urged to stay away from protest groups, avoid crowded places, and keep up with local news for updates on the security situation.

NiDCOM specifically advised business owners to close their shops on April 27—marked as Freedom Day—and consider remaining closed through April 28 and 29, noting that foreign-owned businesses are often targeted during unrest.

The commission added that it is working closely with South African police authorities to ensure the safety of Nigerians and supports the position of the Consul-General in Johannesburg. It also disclosed that , Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, is engaging with South African officials over the situation.
