Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun (pictured) said on Monday that Beijing congratulates Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva on his reelection and is ready to continue strengthening bilateral relations.
“[China] stands ready to work with Brazil to continue advancing the building of a China-Brazil community with a shared future,” Guo said when asked about the election result and Beijing’s expectations for ties between the two countries.
Brazil’s electoral authority declared Lula the winner with 51.8% of the vote, defeating Senator Flavio Bolsonaro, who secured 48.2%, with more than 99% of ballots counted. However, Bolsonaro refused to acknowledge the result and called for the election to be annulled.
