Ella, a Nigerian nurse, has disclosed that she left Catholicism following a difficult and humiliating incident at her church.
Ella said in a now-viral Facebook post that she had gone early for a 7 a.m. Catholic Mass while suffering from despair and sought peace in prayer. She claimed she was wearing a long, non-revealing maxi gown, but immediately after entering the church, some elderly women approached her and complained that her attire was “too tight.”
Ella claims she ignored them and went to sit in the front row, where she began crying and praying. However, she claimed that an elderly woman who worked as a church warden later signalling her to stand up and told her she couldn’t sit there due of her attire.
Ella stated that the encounter left her terribly embarrassed and emotionally broken, forcing her to walk out of church. She claimed that in that moment, she no longer felt like a sinner seeking God, but rather like an offender who was not wanted in God’s house.
Ella, who shared images of the clothes she wore that day, recommended church leaders and administrators to let those who come to church troubled and broken contact God openly, rather than acting as gatekeepers.

That day, I didn’t leave God.
But I left a place where humans had replaced compassion with control.
If someone comes to church heavy-hearted, let them meet God, not gatekeepers.
And yes I’m wearing this gown in this pics but I covered my chest with a very long scarf and my head. Their problem is that the clothe is showing my curves . That I should wear flowing gowns when coming to church!”
