At the 2023 Billboard Music Awards on November 19, Nigerian Afrobeat artists Burna Boy and Rema made tremendous progress in the first Afrobeats categories.
Burna Boy won the Top Afrobeats Artiste title, defeating Wizkid, Rema, Tems, and Libianca, the famous Cameroonian. With this triumph, Burna Boy became the first-ever winner in the history of the recently created Top Afrobeats Artiste category.
Rema’s “Calm Down” remix with Selena Gomez took home the Top Afrobeats Song title, which is another noteworthy victory. Songs like “Rush” by Ayra Starr, “Ku Lo Sa” by Oxlade, “People” by Libianca, and “Soweto” by Victony featuring Rema and Don Toliver were all eclipsed by the remix.
Rema’s “Calm Down” remix won its category, but it was up against fierce competition in other categories as well, losing to other winners including Top Billboard Collaboration, Top Billboard Excl. U.S. Song, Top Billboard Global 200 Song, and Top Radio Song.
American artist Morgan Wallen dominated the overall winners’ list with an astounding 11 trophies, closely followed by Taylor Swift with 10 victories.
