According to a report by Leadership, on Wednesday May 13, 2026, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has condemned rising insecurity in Nigeria after the death of former lawmaker Abba Anas Adamu, who died following his abduction by armed bandits along the Kaduna–Abuja Highway.
The incident has triggered fresh debate about safety on major roads and government response to kidnapping cases, Adamu was said to have been kidnapped on May 3, 2026, and reportedly died nine days later on May 12 despite efforts by his family to secure his release.
The case has drawn attention because it involved a former member of the National Assembly traveling on a busy route, authorities have continued to face criticism over repeated attacks on travelers.
Reacting through a statement issued by his media aide, Atiku Abubakar described the situation as a national tragedy and a serious indictment of President Bola Tinubu administration.
He stated that the killing of a former federal lawmaker in captivity showed deep security failure and government inability to protect citizens, he added that insecurity had reached a dangerous level and affected people across different regions of Nigeria.
He questioned how safe ordinary Nigerians are if even a former legislator can be abducted on a major highway and die in captivity, he argued that repeated kidnappings on highways and rural communities show a persistent pattern of insecurity rather than isolated incidents.
He criticized ongoing government assurances, saying they do not match the reality experienced by citizens, he noted that despite large security spending, major routes like the Abuja-Kaduna corridor remain dangerous for travelers.
Atiku extended condolences to the family of the deceased and people of Jigawa State while urging government to treat insecurity as a national emergency requiring urgent and effective action.
