After facing criticism for how he welcomed the Ooni of Ife, a respected Yoruba monarch, at a recent occasion, veteran Nollywood actor Pete Edochie has finally spoken out.
At the birthday party for Elizabeth Jack-rich, a Nigerian philanthropist and the wife of Nigerian oil magnate Tein Jack-rich, the actor recently had a meeting with the Ooni of Ife.
Upon arriving at the location with his colleague Kanayo O Kanayo, Pete Edochie went to the Ooni’s table to introduce himself.
The actor extended the iconic Igbo backhand handshake to the Ooni, who graciously took it while beaming.
Some Nigerians on social media, however, took issue with this, claiming that the 76-year-old actor was rude for shaking hands with Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, the most powerful monarch in Yoruba country.
They noted that instead of shaking hands, Pete should have bowed to the king as a proper greeting.
Entrepreneur Sommy Keshi defended Pete Edochie by questioning why a titled Chief like Pete Edochie would bow to the Ooni.
He wrote, “High Chief for a reason, Igbo Kwenu.”
Reacting, Pete, who appears to agree with Sommy Keshi’s stance on the issue, reposted Keshi’s post defending him on his Instagram stories.
