A Nigerian man living abroad was reportedly deported from Europe after returning a misplaced wallet to authorities, an act of honesty that unexpectedly revealed his immigration status.
In a popular video posted on X (previously Twitter) by AsakyGRN, the man said how the Nigerian discovered a missing wallet and chose to do the right thing by presenting it to the police station.
However, when cops inquired for his identification, he was unable to present it.
It was eventually determined that he was living in the country illegally, which resulted in his expulsion.
The story triggered emotional reactions online. One commentator wrote, “This world no balance. Person do good, na punishment follow.”
Another said, “Law is law. The police did their job.” Others expressed sympathy, with one user saying, “He chose honesty over survival. That’s painful.”
The incident has once again underlined the harsh realities of undocumented existence overseas, when even the best intentions can have catastrophic consequences.
