A Nigerian man has generated outrage online after criticising his barber for including a 7.5% Value Added Tax (VAT) on clients’ bills.
According to a viral notice circulated online, the barber notified customers that effective January 1, 2026, a 7.5% VAT would be charged to all payments made at the shop.
The barber said that the decision was in accordance with the Federal Inland Revenue Service’s new obligatory regulations.
This comes as the federal government enforces tax policies set to go into effect this year.
The note also apologised for any inconvenience and praised consumers for their ongoing support, saying that the company looks forward to serving them better.
However, many online users were unimpressed with the idea, querying when barbers began charging VAT like huge enterprises.
Reactions immediately spread online. A commenter remarked, “So after a ₦5k haircut, I’ll now pay VAT? Nigeria is not a real place.”
Another commented, “Small businesses are simply trying to survive.
What do you expect if the FIRS disrupt them? Whether it’s stringent compliance or unwarranted overreach, one thing is certain: even a basic haircut is no longer exempt from VAT discussions in Nigeria.
