Reps approve bill to establish almajiri education commission

The House of Representatives has adopted a bill that aims to create a “National Commission for Almajiri Education and Out-of-School Children.”

A bill titled “A Bill for an Act to Establish National Commission for Almajiri Education and Out of School Children to Provide for a Multimodal System of Education to tackle the Menace of Illiteracy, Develop Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Programmes, Prevent Youth Poverty, Delinquency and Destitution in Nigeria; and for Related Matters” was sponsored by Shehu Kakale, a lawmaker from Sokoto State, along with 18 other lawmakers.

Hours after former president Olusegun Obasanjo issued a warning that Nigeria’s more than 20 million unenrolled children, who make up nearly 10% of global statistics, could become terrorists, the bill passed its second reading.
