Qatar 2022: Underdogs Saudi Arabia stun Lionel Messi and his star-studded Argentina squad with 2 – 1 victory

By defeating Lionel Messi’s Argentina in the tournament’s opening match, the Saudi Arabian national team pulled off one of the biggest upsets at the ongoing World Cup in Qatar.

The Gulf nation entered the competition in a group with Argentina, who were expected to win the tournament, and is currently ranked a pitiful 51st in the world, behind hosts Qatar.

Unfortunately for Argentina, the underdogs’ outstanding 2-1 victory sent the world’s third-ranked team plummeting to the bottom of Group C. Saudi Arabia’s victory means Argentina’s 36-game winning streak has ended.

Lionel Messi first scored a penalty for Argentina in the first half, but Saudi Arabia quickly fire back with a  fine finish from Saleh Al-Shehri at the 48-minute mark.

Saudi’s star man Salem Al-Dawsari followed up the equaliser with a rocket into the top corner just minutes later.
