Hunters allegedly killed man and set his corpse ablaze in Adamawa

Seven special hunters have been detained and charged by Adamawa state police in the Lamurde Local Government Area for allegedly killing Danlami Kaura, lighting his body afire, and causing a commotion in the area.

The hunters, whose names were Abubakar Hamman, 48 (Chairman), Musa Mohammed, 38, Ibrahim NEPA, 35, Musa Ibrahim, 21, Ibrahim Jibrilla, 40, Abdullahi Siniya, 31, and Yusuf Buba, 39, were charged with culpable homicide, which carries a death sentence, in violation of Section 191 of the Penal Code, and were sentenced under Section 192(b) of the same law.

The prosecution team claimed that the deceased’s death on May 28, 2022, was brought about by the Chairman of the Special Hunters and six other people. The deceased, along with a man named Bashar Ahmed, reportedly suffered severe injuries to his head and waist as a result of the hunters’ savage attack.

The defense team said that when the deceased was brought to Lamurde Hospital for treatment, the defendants attacked the facility and opened fire, sending everyone—including medical staff—scurrying for cover.

The accused then allegedly broke into the medical facility and took Danlami from his hospital bed to a nearby jungle, where they killed him and burned his body.

It was learnt that while the family members and friends of the deceased were mourning, Abdullahi Sabitu, 3 other special hunters drove in a hilux van at the residence and fired gun shots. The mourners took to their heels for safety which according to the prosecution, amounted to alleged criminal intimidation and inciting public disturbance.

According to the prosecution, the alleged offenses run contrary to section 382 and 80 of the Adamawa State Penal Code Law 2018 respectively.

During hearing, S. B. Digil (Senior State Counsel II) and L. M. Dodo (Senior State Counsel I) appeared for the prosecution, while M. P. Dangi appeared for all the defendants.

The matter was subsequently adjourned to November 29 for the continuation of hearing.
