Daredevil robbers this afternoon attacked the First Bank and Zenith Bank branches at Ankpa town, Ankpa LGA, Kogi State.
The robbers were said to have operated for nearly an hour without resistance as they besieged the facilities in several vehicles including buses and saloon cars shooting sporadically.
They proceeded to blowing up the security doors and ransacking the buildings. Five people were reportedly shot dead, including those hit by stray bullets.
An eyewitness quoted by Daily Trust said the robbers operated for almost an hour, before driving out of the town, shooting sporadically.
“They zoomed off via Okpo road, but no one could come out as they kept firing. Most Ankpa residents are still hiding,” he said.
As at the time of filing the report, it was unclear if lives were lost during the attack or the number of persons injured.
“We cannot rule out casualties. The attack went on for over an hour” said Ahmed, a resident of Ankpa.
Attempts to confirm the incident from the Kogi state police public relations officer, SP William Aya were not successful but a resident was quoted to have said a combined team of security operatives moved towards the area after the robbers had left.
