Phone thief set ablaze by mob in Bayelsa state

A crowd in Biogbolo, Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, set a suspected thief who purportedly specializes in stealing phones and other valuables on fire.

On Wednesday, August 17, at approximately 8.45 p.m., it was discovered that the suspect, who is thought to be in his 30s, was captured robbing a resident at gunpoint of his mobile phone. According to reports, some young people in the neighbourhood chased after him and then caught him.

The suspect was attacked by the irate youngsters with machetes and other tools before being tied up and set on fire.

According to a source who spoke to Daily Trust, the suspect initially succeeded in the operation after firing into the air to frighten people away, but he made the mistake of returning to the area where vigilantes caught him.

It was further gathered that the suspect had been arrested by the vigilante group sometime in March this year and handed over to the police.

Police spokesman in Bayelsa State, SP Asinim Butswat who confirmed the incident said; 

“On 17 August, 2022 at about 2020 hours, a suspected armed robber allegedly pointed a gun at a resident of Green Villa Road, Biogbolo and robbed him of his Android phone. Angry mob who witnessed the incident chased the suspect, beat him up and burned him to death before the arrival of the police.

“The command cautioned members to the public against taking the law into their own hands. The corpse has been evacuated and deposited at the mortuary for autopsy. Investigation is ongoing.”
