Defender Marc Cucurella has been acquired by Chelsea from Brighton & Hove Albion.
The 24-year-old Spanish full-back completed a medical on Thursday afternoon and then signed a six-year contract with Stamford Bridge.
Cucurella will be acquired by Chelsea for an initial sum of £55 million plus potential bonuses of £7 million, and in a separate deal, Levi Colwill will join the Seagulls on loan.
The Blues used social media to herald his arrival and poke fun at Brighton after they rejected rumors that Cucurella was traveling to Stamford Bridge.
The defender expressed his delight about joining “one of the top clubs in the world” on the team website.
Cucurella said: ‘I’m really happy. It’s a big opportunity for me to join one of the best clubs in the world and I’m going to work hard to be happy here and help the team.’
The ex-Barcelona player becomes the seventh most expensive defender of all-time, with Harry Maguire still topping the list following his £80million move from Leicester to Manchester United in 2019.
The signing sees Todd Boehly’s summer spending exceed £150million, following the arrivals of Raheem Sterling, Kalidou Koulibaly, Carney Chukwuemeka, and Gabriel Slonina already.
