Ekiti man sentenced to 4 years in prison for raping an 11-year-old girl

Dele Adeyanju, 49, was found guilty of raping an 11-year-old girl and was given a four-year prison term.

In September 2019, charges against him were filed.

The defendant, the accusation claims, “An 11-year-old girl was raped on January 14, 2019, in Omuo Ekiti, Ekiti East Local Government Area, Ekiti State. Section 31 of the Child’s Right Law, Cap. C7, Laws of Ekiti State of Nigeria, 2012, was broken by the offense.”

In her statement to the police, the child claimed that on that fateful day, she had lunch, went to hawk garri, and then came home from school.

The defendant then called her and bought N100 garri but when she bent to carry her garri container, he overpowered her, dragged her into his room, and penetrated her while covering her mouth with a towel to muffle her screams.

She said she bled after the incident and was in a lot of pain but was afraid to tell her mother.

But when the pain became unbearable, she opened up to her mother who then reported to the police.

An Ekiti State High Court sitting in Ado Ekiti found Dele Adeyanju guilty of rape and sentenced him.

In the court judgment, Justice Bamidele Omotoso said: “I resolved the sole issue in favour of the prosecution and against the defendant. I hold that the prosecution has proved beyond reasonable doubt the allegation of rape against the defendant. The defendant is accordingly convicted as charged.

“Consequently, the defendant is hereby sentenced to four years imprisonment, without an option of fine. The term of imprisonment shall begin to run from 17th of March, 2021 when his bail was revoked by this honourable court and was ordered to be remanded in the custody of the Nigeria Correctional Centre, Ado Ekiti.”
