Pregnant woman, infant, others reportedly burnt to death as fire guts Jetty in Port Harcourt

A fire at the famed Bonny-Bille-Nembe jetty in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, claimed the lives of several people, including a pregnant mother and a two-month-old baby.

The inferno, which began around 2 a.m. on Monday, April 11, is also said to have destroyed several fiber and over 40 wooden boats.

Thousands of citizens go by boat from Port Harcourt to Bonny, Bille, Nembe, and other riverine settlements, making the jetty a bustling transit point.

At the time of reporting this report, the cause of the enormous fire was unknown.

Previous fires at the jetty were blamed on the storing of flammable materials such as petroleum products used to fuel speed boat engines in temporary storage areas.
