The narrow gauge train traveling from Lagos to Kano derailed near Jaji in Kaduna State’s Igabi Local Government Area, killing the train driver in the process.
The event was confirmed by Abdullahi Alhaji, Public Relations Officer, Northern Regional District, Nigeria Railways Corporation, NRC, Zaria, to the News Agency of Nigeria in Zaria on Thursday.
Mr Alhaji claims that the railway’s driver, Bala Kawu, killed in the event as the cargo train was transporting soft drinks to Kano.
He said the incident happened as a result of vandalization of the slippers and other accessories of the rail track in the area.
Mr Alhaji said rescue efforts are currently ongoing to recover the remains of the deceased to salvage the situation for the train to continue its journey to Kano.
