Bayelsa State Police command have apprehended a 39-year-old woman, identify as Esther Otoniye, at Akenfa area, Yenagoa for utilizing a hot pressing iron to burn her step-daughter, a 10-year-old girl buttock.
It was reported that the arrest was authorized by the State CP-commissioner of police after complaints by different child rights organisations and women as well as the GRTI-Gender Response Team Initiatives, NHRC-National Human Rights Commission and the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA)
The woman was recorded to have rejected committing the act, explaining that heated water accidentally sprayed on the girl’s buttocks while in kitchen.
Officials of child rights groups stated the body of the girl had wounds suspected to have come from hazardous and repeated beating.
Als Oko reported that the gender division of the Bayelsa Police Command has carried the child to the police force clinic for examination while the case would be transmitted to Bayelsa state police headquarters.
Asinim Butswat, the state police spokesperson stated the case had been transmitted to (SCID) State Criminal Investigation Department for further interrogation and investigations.
