A 23-year-old woman remanded for stealing baby from Kwara hospital

A Magistrate Court in Ilorin has remanded Nike Owolabi, 23, in the Federal Correctional Service Centre for allegedly abducting a newborn infant at Ajisafe Hospital, Omu Aran in the Irepodun local government area of Kwara State.

The suspect, who is from Ora in the Ifedayo local government area of Osun State, allegedly committed the crime while visiting the hospital to assist a patient, one Blessing Alabi, who had a baby by caesarean section.

Owolabi picked up the newborn baby, backed her out of the hospital, and began walking away before being apprehended by Rachael Alabi, the infant’s mother-in-law (Blessing Alabi).

Closed-circuit cameras in the hospital saw the defendant wandering around the institution, greeting people who were not her relatives, with the intent of doing the terrible crime.

The court granted the prosecutor’s plea that the accused individual not be granted bail because she is charged with child kidnapping, which is not normally bailable.

After directing that the accused person be remanded in a Federal Correctional Centre, Chief Magistrate Saliu Muhammed postponed the case until March 8, 2022 for further hearing.
