Lt.-Gen. Faruk Yahaya, the Chief of Army Staff, has ordered the immediate release of a female soldier, Pte. Hannah Sofiat, who was detained a few weeks ago at the National Youth Service Corps Orientation Camp in Yikpata, Kwara, for accepting a marriage proposal from a male corps member.
According to army sources, the Nigerian Army Chief requested her release in the spirit of Christmas.
Sofiat had previously been jailed for breaking military rules and regulations by displaying an intimate relationship with a paramilitary trainee, a corps member, in public. After video recordings of her accepting a marriage proposal from a male corps member at the NYSC orientation camp in Kwara became popular on social media, she was imprisoned.
The Nigerian Army had been urged to free the female soldier by a number of organizations and individuals.
