Benue petitions police and DSS over rape of school girls

The administration of Benue State has filed a complaint with the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Security Service (DSS) in connection with the alleged rape of several female students at a federal government-run institution in the state.

A female student at the Federal Science and Technical College (FSTC) in Otukpo, Benue State, was allegedly raped by a member of the school’s staff. A 16-year-old female SSS 3 student was allegedly raped by the staff, and there are rumors that other female pupils have been raped as well.

While it was reported that the accused rapist had been suspended, Julie Ooja, a human rights activist, told Daily Trust that she attempted to pursue the issue but was told that it was being handled administratively.

Ooja said;

“Our hands were tied; we couldn’t do much because the ministry refrained us and the parents didn’t give us a lee way to match it on.”

The state Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Barrister Mike Gusa however announced in a press conference in Makurdi, that the state government has taken up the matter by asking the appropriate government institution to investigate the case.

Gusa said;

“We have written a letter of complaint to the police and the Director of SSS in the state to carry out a discreet investigation into the matter and verify the veracity of the case.’’
