Senator Danjuma Goje, who represents Gombe Central, was attacked shortly after arriving in the state on Friday, November 5.
Goje was said to have arrived at Gombe Airport in Lawanti around 10:40 a.m. for a wedding fatihah, but thugs were said to have blocked the Gombe-Bauchi Highway near the International Conference Centre, set bonfires on the road, and refused entry into or outside Gombe.
Several vehicles were smashed or burned, according to the Daily Trust, and scores of people were injured to varying degrees.
Goje is in the state on a personal engagement, according to Lilian Nworie, a senator’s aide, and was attacked by thugs loyal to the incumbent Governor, Inuwa Yahaya.
Police personnel stationed in the neighborhood, according to Nworie, did nothing to stop the commotion. However, it has been claimed that police officers have been dispatched to the area in attempt to restore law and order.
Yahaya and Goje are alleged to be at odds over matters concerning the state and their political organization, the All Progressives Congress (APC).
