Pandemonium in Owerri as gunmen enforce lockdown, causing children to run home from school

Pandemonium erupted in Owerri, Imo State, as gunmen shot and chased anyone who refused to obey the sit-at-home order.

Every Monday, IPOB has proclaimed a sit-at-home protest against the arrest of its leader, Nnamdi Kanu. The sit-in was later canceled, but individuals in the South-East who try to go about their business on Mondays are regularly harassed.

On the 4th of October, there was sporadic firing as gunmen targeted people going about their daily lives in Owerri.

Schoolchildren and instructors were forced to flee to their homes. As the gunmen went around at 10 a.m. today, banks, hotels, shops, and other workplaces were hurriedly closed.

Parents closed their businesses for the day and ran to schools, looking for their kids.

Street hawkers, bike riders, bus drivers, and other service providers also ran away, leaving streets deserted.

A resident said airlines were not left out and a plane had to take off before the scheduled time.
