Rita Umoh and her husband, Akan Umoh, have been detained by the Akwa Ibom State Police Command for allegedly poisoning his 10-year-old kid over a witchcraft claim.
SP Odiko Macdon, the command’s spokesperson, said in a statement on Tuesday, September 14, that the duo was apprehended after a tip-off by detectives from the Abak division.
“On the 29th of August, 2021, at approximately 4:30 p.m., based on information received from one Mfon Francis of Ekpat Iduot village, one Akan Jimmy Umoh and his wife Rita Jimmy Umoh of the same address conspired and poisoned to death her stepson, one Master Savior Jimmy Umoh, a 10-year-old boy on the allegation of witchcraft,” the statement read.
“Detectives from the Abak Division reacted quickly and apprehended Akan and Rita Jimmy Umoh, the deceased’s father and stepmother.
“During questioning, the suspects admitted to administering a poisonous concoction known as “Evil Beans” to the child in order to remove witchcraft, which they claimed was the cause of their economic woes and health problems, including his half siblings’ poor academic performance, according to prophecy.”
A search of the house found the stepmother’s plainly written inscription on the wall, “Saviour is the witch of this house.” While the body was being removed and lodged in the mortuary for autopsy, photographs were taken.
“The CP has assured that the perpetrators of these crimes will be prosecuted and has called on members of the public to be vigilant and do well in giving the Police and Sister Security Agencies timely information which will assist in curbing crimes and criminality.
