During the ongoing local government elections in Kaduna State on Saturday, September 4, a 9-year-old girl named Zainab Bala-Umar was killed by a stray bullet at Gwanki Ward in Makarfi.
According to an eyewitness, Alhaji Yahaya Gwanki, a stray bullet was fired by a military personnel in an attempt to disperse the gathering after the soldier was invited by a former chairman of Makarfi local government who is also an APC candidate in the election.
According to Gwanki, the APC candidate, Alhaji Kabir Maiyere, went to one of the polling units under Fadamar Gwanki and while speaking with an election official about some issues with the e-voting equipment, some youngsters began shouting, “ba ma so, ba ma so,” which means “we don’t want.”
“Maiyere then invited soldiers to shoot in the air, and the girl was hit and killed in the process.” Gwanki remarked.
Engr Auwal-bz Nuhu, the Special Assistant to Ibrahim Wusoro, the Kaduna State PDP Secretary, claimed the deceased was on her way to Islamiyya school in Gwanki Ward when the event occurred.
Military personnel were not authorized to be present at polling stations, according to ASP Mohammed Jalige, a spokesperson for the State Police Command, who confirmed the occurrence.
He went on to say that the suspects would be apprehended, that the situation would be investigated, and that the press would be briefed.
