A 27-year-old man has been arrested by the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) Kwara State Command for allegedly stealing a Toyota Camry saloon automobile.

In a statement issued in Ilorin on Monday, August 23, the command’s spokesperson, Babawale Afolabi, said the suspect, Abubakar Aliyu, a father of two, committed the crime at a private hostel in the Kwara State University (KWASU) Malete area of the city.

“After getting a complaint of a missing car on Thursday, August 19, 2021, our intelligence and investigation section was dispatched to seek for the aforementioned car. The incident happened at a hostel in Ilorin’s Malete neighborhood. Abubakar Aliyu was apprehended with the car thanks to the intelligence and investigative department’s monitoring squad, according to the statement.

The owner, according to Afolabi, parked the car in front of the hostel around 11 p.m. on Wednesday, August 11, 2021, but was surprised when he couldn’t find it the next day.

“Abubakar smashed a window in one of the hostels and made off with the car key, successfully snatching the vehicle. The suspect brought the car to one painter, Adewunmi Taiwo Gabriel, at his business in Ilorin’s Oko Erin Area, where the red paint was changed to black. This was completed in less than eight hours, with the suspect standing by the painter and driving the car away the same day “he explained.

He continued, “The painter, Adewunmi Taiwo, may not have colluded with the suspect, but acted recklessly in painting and changing the color of the car.”

He further stated that the two suspects are presently in the custody of the civil defense, and that Abubakar has confessed to the crime.
