On Wednesday night, gunmen allegedly killed six police officers at a police checkpoint along the Obeagu Uno-Amodu – Umueze Amechi route in the state’s Enugu South Local Government Area.
The hoodlums attacked the checkpoint at Obeagu Uno immediately after Inyaba Bridge around 7:30 p.m., according to our source.
The hoodlums who came from the Agbani axis of the road had their initial meeting with cops at 4 Corner and at Amagunze in Nkanu East Council headquarters before proceeding to attack the checkpoint at Enugu South, according to community sources.
Although details of the incident were scarce, one source told The PUNCH that the hoodlums killed roughly six police officers at the checkpoint, set fire to their Hilux van, and grabbed their AK-47 firearms.
“Around 7 p.m., we started hearing gunshots along the road,” one source stated on the condition of anonymity. The session lasted approximately 30 minutes. However, the hoodlums appeared to have overcome the cops following the gunshot when they lit their vehicle on fire.
“I can’t say how many officers were murdered, but there were six officers at the checkpoint. What I can tell you is that the incident resulted in the deaths of up to six persons. It’s possible that some of the hoodlums were also involved.”
Daniel Ndukwe, the State Police Public Relations Officer, verified the incident when called, but could not provide details on the casualties.
“I need to verify that and revert, please,” Ndukwe stated in a text message to our correspondent.
