Sunday Adeyemo, also known as Sunday Igboho, a Yoruba activist, was detained by security forces in Cotonou, Benin Republic.
Igboho was apprehended Monday night after fleeing Nigeria to avoid being apprehended by the country’s Department of State Services, or DSS.
After a raid on Igboho’s home on July 1, 2021, the DSS proclaimed him wanted.
According to a person familiar with his departure from Nigeria, he had finalised arrangements to flee Nigeria via Cotonou and was on his way to Germany.
However, he was apprehended by security forces in a nearby country.
“Sunday Igboho has been arrested in Cotonou,” a person close to the situation claimed. He was apprehended just over an hour ago.
“This evening, he was due to proceed to Germany via Cotonou. He intended to depart from Africa via Cotonou. In Cotonou, he was apprehended by security forces.
“They intend to repatriate him to Nigeria.”
