20 dead and 70 people missing as floods destroy buildings and leave families trapped on rooftops in Germany (photos)

After torrential rain created flash flooding in Germany, buildings were demolished and homes and cars were swept away, killing at least 20 people and leaving 70 more missing.

Four individuals were confirmed dead in Schuld overnight when rain swept away six homes, while another four were discovered dead in flooded cellars across the state of North Rhine-Westphalia.

Two firefighters have also died, one of them drowned while attempting to save people in the town of Altena on Wednesday. During rescue operations at a power plant at Werdohl-Elverlingsen, another firefighter died.

One person died near Rheinbach, about 20 miles south of Cologne, according to the Bild newspaper. The actual circumstances of their death, however, were unknown.

Another eight persons were killed in the county of Euskirchen as a result of the flooding, according to emergency services, with rescue operations still ongoing.

Up to 70 more individuals are missing, according to police, the majority of whom were citizens who were sheltering in their homes when the roadways transformed into roaring torrents.

Police in the western city of Koblenz said Thursday that about 50 were trapped on the roofs of their houses awaiting rescue.
