Four members of a Muslim family were murdered on Sunday, June 6 and a nine-year-old boy left fighting for his life after a 20-year-old man plowed his pickup truck into them due to their Muslim faith.

The family who had immigrated from Pakistan 14 years ago, were attacked in London, Ontario, Canada – a city of 500,000 with a Muslim population of around 30,000.

The driver, Nathaniel Veltman, chose his victims at random and targeted them because of their faith, police said – ramming his black pickup into the family as they went on an evening stroll.

He was arrested immediately after and now faces four counts of first-degree murder.

A councilor in Brampton, Ontario, Gurpreet Singh Dhillon, tweeted: ‘My prayers are with the City of London, Ontario following the heinous hate crime that took place against an innocent Muslim family. I stand in solidarity with our Muslim brothers and sisters across Canada who are mourning this loss. #Islamophobia & hate have no place here.’

Veltman made his first court appearance on Monday, June 7 over a phone line from London police headquarters.

The charges were read to him: one count of attempted murder of a youth ‘by striking him with a motor vehicle, namely a Dodge Ram pickup truck,’ and four first-degree murder charges.

  1. Too many people will always find an excuse to despise and abuse those who are superficially different, including religious wear. This was evident when a non-white man wearing a red “Keep America Great” cap (with “45” on the side) called a nine-year-old girl wearing a hijab a “f—–g Muslim terrorist” at a Surrey, B.C. grocery store a few months ago. The girl’s father rightly confronted the man and repeatedly called him a racist. (I can imagine the shameful pleasure felt and rampant media postings left by white supremacists upon learning the accused racist was not Caucasian!) As far as terrorism goes, the girl’s family is far more likely to be fleeing extremist violence abroad than planning to perpetrate it elsewhere. But that ironic fact may not matter, anyway; ‘their kind’ are still not welcome.

I’ve found that a disturbingly large number of categorized people, however precious their souls, can be considered thus treated as though disposable, even to an otherwise democratic nation. When the young children of those people take notice of this, tragically, they’re vulnerable to begin perceiving themselves as beings without value. While the inhuman devaluation of these people is based on religion (and maybe race), it still reminds me of an external devaluation, albeit a subconscious one, of the daily civilian lives lost in protractedly devastating war zones and heavily armed sieges. They can eventually receive meagre column inches in the First World’s daily news’ back pages.

      • You’re quite welcome, and thank you.

While it may sound silly to some people, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s speech suggestion (about four days ago) that “the next time you see a woman in a hijab or a family out for a stroll, give them a smile,” is actually a very healthy response by caring individuals toward ALL acts of targeted hate.

In light of the often-frustrating limitations of law-enforcement and letter-writing, I decided to do just that as a rebellious response to the anticipated acts of anti-Muslim hate that soon followed Donald Trump’s 2016 presidential election victory. Anti-Trump demonstrators’ catchy slogan was “Love Trumps Hate”. Though I’m not much for loving non-family (except for dark chocolate truffle ice cream), I would do the next best thing: offer a smile.

But when offering a smile, one should do so promptly. In my first attempt, with a passing woman wearing a Muslim head scarf, I hesitated long enough (likely for fear of possibly offending her modesty) for her to catch my blank stare and quickly look away. Therefor, the opposite of my intended friendly gesture was likely perceived by her. I can imagine the woman, presumably also aware of the jubilant post-election pro-Trump/anti-Muslim mood southward, taking me for just another Islamophobic creep. To this day, it remains for me a bitter example of the road to hell also being paved with good intentions.

I made sure to not repeat the mistake, however, as I passed a middle-aged Black woman along the sidewalk. To me, she had a lined expression of one who’d endured a hard life. I gave her a smile, and her seemingly tired face lit up with her own smile, as though mine was the last thing she’d expected to receive. Since then, we always greet one another and even converse while awaiting the bus.

In today’s climate of bigotry, I feel it’s not enough to just not think/act hateful; we all also need to display kindness, perhaps through a sincere smile.

Thank you for your patience with my posts.
