A herder has been hospitalised at the Narok County Referral Hospital after being attacked by a marauding hyena that also injured his two relatives.
Riemet ole Nchoe said he was manning his farm at Enkutoto village in Narok South when the hyena attacked and bit his left hand leaving him with serious injuries.
“I had slept before I heard a high-pitched sound prompting me to wake up immediately only to find the animal biting me,” he said.
Two neighbours who had responded to his distress calls also sustained minor bite injuries. The two were treated at the same facility and discharged.
The 41-year-old appealed to the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) to send a team to secure the area and curb the rampant hyena attacks.
Doctors have however said the patient is responding well to treatment and could be discharged in a week’s time.
Cases of human-wildlife conflict in Narok, which hosts the world famous Maasai Mara Game Park are not new, but rarely have hyenas attacked human beings.
